The Latest IPCC Report

The synthesis report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was published last week on 20th March. Representatives from 195 countries were present as the report was formally approved.

This report is the outcome of eight years’ work compiling scientific studies on global warming. It brings together findings from the three working groups: the physical scientific basis of climate change; impacts, adaptation and vulnerability; and mitigation of climate change.

It highlights again that human beings have had an undeniable impact on the global climate. This report also points out how far justice and equity issues must be considered when taking climate action

Key findings:

  • Global temperature continues to rise;
  • Greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise;
  • Ecosystems and populations are becoming more vulnerable;
  • The impact of climate change will intensify as the planet warms.

While this may not come as a surprise to many of you, it confirms that we need to act now, more than ever.

As a society, we need to:

  • Step up to the challenge we face and implement ambitious climate policies
  • Raise awareness among the general public and young people to speed action;
  • Engage organisations so they take responsibility and act efficiently: we all have a part to play!

The solutions do exist. We can face this climate emergency together. According to the IPCC, we have all the knowledge, skills, and global capital we need to take this challenge on, collectively. Everything rests on how soon governments and organisations can mobilise efforts for change.

This report will form the basis of negotiations at COP28 in Dubai in November.

Climate Fresk relies on the IPCC’s work and we are studying this new report carefully for fresh insights, especially around inequality.
