Cardiff Council sparked a city-wide climate movement across schools

At a glance

The Aha moment

  • When a couple of Cardiff Council staff attended a Climate Fresk workshop at the EAUC Annual Conference in Bath, they immediately saw its potential for Cardiff schools.

  • Climate Fresk was dynamic, collaborative and slotted easily into the Welsh curriculum, especially the 2-hour junior version.

The Challenge

Cardiff Council launched One Planet Cardiff – a bold strategy to make the city carbon neutral by 2030.

A key part of this mission is weaving climate-change learning into the new Welsh curriculum, empowering young people to get involved and to shape their own school-based action plans.

To make that happen, they needed something interactive, collaborative, and capable of truly engaging learners.

The Solution

Fuelled by enthusiasm for this new approach, the Cardiff Council Curriculum team scaled workshops quickly.

They forged strong partnerships with schools, offering facilitator training to teachers, as well as training up their own internal teams.

Through the workshop, learners have been able to grasp climate science, think critically, and collaborate for change.

Climate Fresk workshops are a fun, highly collaborative way to explore the science of climate change by piecing together its causes and effects as a card game, adding creative flair, and sparking group-led action. – Gwilym Owen
