Saint-Gobain has made Climate Fresk part of its company-wide effort to build climate awareness, reaching its target of having around 80% of employees around the world experience the workshop. The goal is to translate that shared understanding into practical action, while making sustainability an integral part of business decisions, employee engagement and risk management.
The construction sector faces major climate challenges, while sustainability can be complex and difficult to translate into practical decisions. Scientific data and technical arguments are essential, but they do not automatically lead to change.
Saint-Gobain’s challenge is to move beyond awareness and individual enthusiasm, embedding sustainability into everyday work. In a changing economic and regulatory environment, this also means recognising the business implications of fossil-fuel dependency, supply-chain vulnerability and the transition towards more circular, resource-efficient products.
Saint-Gobain adopted a top-down approach to Climate Fresk, setting a target for broad employee participation. The workshop uses visual cards and collaborative problem-solving to make climate science accessible, regardless of participants’ technical background. Rather than telling people what they should do, it gives them the opportunity to understand climate change together and relate it to their own work.
The workshop can also be adapted to a team’s core business. The company uses it to engage employees and support training for sales teams, helping them develop the knowledge needed to discuss sustainability with customers. Teams can be challenged to identify three practical measures they could implement in their own roles.
Communication is central to this process: facts provide the foundation, but respectful dialogue helps people connect with the subject and understand different perspectives. Skilled facilitation creates a safe space for colleagues from different generations and backgrounds to share their views without blame or shame.
Saint-Gobain has reached its stated target of around 80% employee participation in Climate Fresk worldwide, creating a broad foundation of shared climate awareness. The next priority is to translate that foundation into tangible impact and make sustainability part of normal business practice.
The approach also creates opportunities to connect climate action with business priorities such as resilience, risk management and circularity.
We are still the same! We just changed our name ;)
